Introduction:
Most children with normal development will progress to adolescence and adulthood and will achieve their maturational goals with the support of their family, teachers and peers. A few, however, need more assistance. We have only to look around us to recognize them. Apart from the various emotional and behavioral problems that children go through, there are certain specific learning problems that are distressing for certain children. They might write alphabets in reverse despite being bright children. They might work hard all year but forget all that they have learnt, just before the exams and so on. As a result, they might stay aloof and be poorly adjusted with their peers.
These children and their families go through high levels of distress. It is essential to address these difficulties in an adequate and comprehensive manner. None of this is possible without the accurate assessment of the child’s problem on its various dimensions.
At Manas, we have planned a course on understanding Learning Disability, its implications, screening and remediation. The course is aimed at helping teachers, educationists and students of Psychology to identify and manage the same.
The learning process is an amalgamation of language, perception and cognition. Perception is the processes by which the brain and the various neurological synapses assimilate information from the environment, tallies it with the past experience and gives response to the present situation. Language is a code through which ideas about the environment are represented through a conventional system of arbitrary signals for communication. Cognition is the internal structures and processes that are involved in the acquisition and use of knowledge, including sensation, perception, attention, learning, memory, language, thinking, and reasoning. Any impairment in language, perception & cognition, can lead to learning deficits.
In this course we are targeting how to identify to visual, auditory deficit and motor planning deficit (dysprexia) and the implication arising out of these in the management process of the growing child as these deficits when not given intervention at an appropriate time can lead to deviant cognitive and language development in the child.
